“One day in detention, a tiny bird flew through the window. When I saw it, I wished we could trade places.”

Patricia, a young woman from Nicaragua, shared this memory of her time in immigration detention. As a college student, she was persecuted by her government for participating in pro-democracy protests. She sought safety in the U.S. and won asylum with support from the Florence Project. She now lives in Florida, where she’s rebuilding her life and feels free at last in “this country that has opened its horizon to me”.
